When the dough is chilled, roll it in to 1 to 2 inch balls and place them two inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for 8 to 12 minutes, depending on the size. Make sure the cookie sheets are cooled before you put the next batch on so that they don't melt flat on the pan before they get in the oven.

Remove them from the oven and let the pan cool for about 3 minutes. Use a spatula to remove them from the cookie sheet and then place them on a wire rack to cool. Serve them warm with milk or let them cool completely and store them in a cookie jar for later.

Michael Phelps 2008 Olympics - Move Over Mark Spitz, You Are Toast!

Michael Phelps at the 2008 Olympics has done it! He has smashed Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals in the Olympia. In a very heated event he barely beat Milorad Cavic by a fingernail.

Just a mere .01 of second in the 100m butterfly on Saturday at the Beijing Olympics Water Cube.

Cavic's team coach filed a protest after the race, according to NBC reporter Andrea Kremer, but FINA, swimming's world governing body, refused to accept it.

Phelps, was trailing the race-he was second to last (7th out of 8 swimmers) at the first wall but made up for with a fast as lighting turn at the wall. His size 14 feet acting as flippers. Even with his fast turn he was still behind Cavic.

Then in the final meters he shot out and got to the wall first in 50.58 to Cavic's 50.59. Just .01 seconds faster but enough to win his 7th gold medal.

Mark Spitz, as you know held the record after having won 7 golds at the Munich Games.

Phelps final event is the tell all. He will try to beat that record in the 4x100m medley relay Sunday in the final day of swimming in Beijing.

Cavis, who is a California-trained swimmer and who competes for Serbia, beat Phelps in the swim heats as the second-fastest man to swim the event. He almost ruined Phelps chance at making Olympic and swimming history.

Phelps was quoted as saying "Cavic's words before the race fueled me."

Phelps continued on saying "Cavic said it would be good for me and good for swimming if he won" Further he Phelps said "I'm at a loss for words. I had no idea the race was that close. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the wall first."

Michael Phelps has set world records in every event except one. Crocker's record, 50.40 set in 2005, is the only world record Phelps has not smashed in Beijing.

Phelps stated later that tying Mark Spitz's record has been a long term goal of his. Well it seems that this young man has seen this goal/dream come true today.

"In my dreams I always wanted it," he stated. "I thought in the perfect circumstances I could do it."

Spitz marveled at the way Phelps has dealt with all the media attention and pre-Beijing hype since Phelps won six golds in Athens.

"I've always marveled at the fact that in the last four years, he has had to live with a lot more expectations and anxiety that I had to deal with," Spitz stated.

How To Grout Your Tile And Stone

More and more homeowners are experiencing the satisfaction of repairing their tile and grout. The high cost of labor for even small jobs, has driven people to the stores looking for tile, materials, products and information.

I've seen many new homes with completed ceramic tile jobs that have made the hair on the back of my neck stand up in fright ... especially tract homes where the bottom line for the developer is speed and corners to cut. So the more we learn about the different trades and the applications and techniques thereof, the better we will recognize a well performed and finished product to be proud of.

With this in mind, here are some grouting techniques to install in your memory banks for your next tile or stone job around the house.

Whether you have laid new tile or have scraped out the grout from an existing tiled area, make sure you clean the grout joints thoroughly and have taped off the areas you don't want the grout to "spill over." Wiping grout off of sealed cabinets and semi or glossy paints, won't hurt those materials if you use care when wiping, but sometimes a little labor invested in taping adjacent areas will make the job easier in the long run.

When the grout joints are clean and ready to fill; mix the powdered grout with clean water and according to the package specifications. The grout should be lump-free with a consistency that will not easily pour out of the bucket.

Use the appropriate grout for your application. A non-sanded grout should be used for grout joints that are 1/8" and smaller in widths, while sanded grouts are to be used in joints which are larger. Typically you'll find the smaller grout joints filled with the non-sanded grout in the bathroom and shower areas.

Use some latex gloves to protect your hands and with a grout float held at a 30-45 degree angle, spread the grout firmly into the grout joints. Don't worry about the mess on the tiles as this will clean up with your sponge at the proper time. Some areas that are hard to float, you can force the grout into the joint by hand. When all the joints are filled completely, scrape the excess grout off the tiles by holding the float at an almost 90 degree angle and pulling diagonally across the joints so you don't remove grout from the joints. Put all the remaining grout back in the bucket.

Allow the grout to set for about 10 minutes then with a clean bucket of water and grout sponge, lightly wipe the tiles with a damp sponge (not a dripping sponge). Always wipe with a clean side of the sponge, flip the sponge over and wipe another section, then rinse the sponge clean. The initial sponging wipes most of the unwanted grout from the surface. The second sponging smoothes and neatens the joints and the third cleans the haze or residue from the tile. Always allow a few minutes between the three sponging cycles as this will allow the grout time to properly set. Remember, you don't want water from the sponge to puddle on the grout as this weakens and deforms the consistency.

Lastly, a final wipe will smooth any remaining high spots in the grout joints and clean the tiles of the remaining haze. After the grout dries, you can polish the tile with cheesecloth or a soft cotton cloth to remove any remaining residue. Nice Job!

Coffee - The Origin Of The Species

Coffee, along with tea and soft drinks is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The popularity and liking for coffee as a beverage can be gauged by the fact that its consumption is approximately one third of the volume of water consumed in the United States and Europe. The coffee that we drink is actually prepared from seeds, normally referred to as beans, of the coffee plant.

Coffee beans usually grow in pairs in the coffee cherry. In some rare cases, a single bean can also be found growing in the plant. Such single beans are known as pea-berry or carcoli beans. Pea-berry has a more prominent flavor than other Arabica beans are high on demand and are more expensive.

Species and Origins: The Genus, Coffea, to which the coffee plant belongs, contains about 25 species out of which the most prominent are: - The older species Coffea Arabica, was called the Kaffa, originated in Ethiopia. - The newer species, Coffea canephora (Robusta), probably originated in Uganda. - Coffea liberica, which is indigenous to Liberia - Coffea esliaca, that is believed to be indigenous to Sudan

Whereas Coffea Robusta is a shrub type plant, Coffea Arabica grows more like a tree. Some varieties of the coffee plant grow up to 30 feet but for easy picking of the coffee berry they are seldom allowed to grow beyond 15 feet. The coffee plant grows best under the shade of natural vegetation classified as Tropical Semi-deciduous Forest and in warm humid isothermal climate with annual precipitation of 1800-2000 mm and a mean annual temperature of 21-21.9°C

The best soils for coffee plants are deep sandy loam soils with coarse makeup perspective, having good aeration, moderate infiltration, and pH from 5.0 to 6.0. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous are the most important elements though physical conditions can limit growth to a great extent.

Initially, Arabica coffees were named after the ports that they were exported from - for example, Java, from Indonesia and Mocha, from Yemen. Arabica is considered by many to be better in taste than Robusta, but the species is more susceptible to disease and therefore not as profitable to grow. The flavor of the Arabica beans depends upon the region they are grown in. Arabica beans are now grown in three main regions - Latin America, East Africa/Arabia and Asia/Pacific, and have distinctive characteristics of flavor, aroma, body, and acidity levels. Apart from the region, processing, genetic subspecies or varieties of beans also have a great impact on the coffee flavor and taste. For example, washed or wet processed beans tend to be more acidic in taste. Some regions even produce coffee beans that have a citrus-like or earthy flavor and aroma which can be best described as berry-like or flowery.

Robusta coffees are cultivated in environments where Arabica cannot blossom and have approximately 45% more caffeine than Arabica coffees. Robusta has little taste and tends to be bitter and has a typical "burnt rubber" and "wet cardboard" aroma and flavor. Robusta beans are cost effective but their peculiar taste is not liked by a many. To make Robusta beans more palatable and suitable for coffee blends the undesirable flavors are removed through a steaming process. Some espresso blends use good quality Robusta to decrease costs and get a better "crema" or foamy head.

Modern coffee, however, is more origin specific, and is known by country, region, varietals and even the estate it is grown and processed in.

Some coffees are made from particular varietals. Varietal, a botanical term that refers to a taxonomic category rank below species and are not related to origin are more specific than Arabica and Robusta. Coffees made of beans from single varietals are generally referred as such and in certain cases. The name of the region is added for distinctive branding. Rwanda Blue Bourbon is one such example of a coffee made from single varietals and made in Rwanda.

Brazil remains the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee. In recent years, however, there has been a flood of Robusta beans from Vietnam. The preference of the large industrial houses, multinational roasters and instant coffee producers, for the Robusta variety, due to its cheaper cost, was instrumental in the huge influx, precipitating a crisis of sorts in the prices of coffee the world over.

Aggregates can be fine or coarse. Fine aggregate is usually sand although other materials may be substituted. The ideal sand for concrete contains particles that vary uniformly in size from very fine grit up to 4 in. When landscaping around your mailbox the gradation from fine to coarse is important because the finer particles fill the spaces between the larger pieces.

Gravel, crushed stone, pebbles and slag are coarse aggregates that are a minimum of ¼ in. in size. As you can see, therefore, there is a constant gradation in aggregate size ranging from the very finest aggregates in the sand to the coarsest in the gravel. Larger sizes in coarse aggregate can go up.

The reasoning behind the gradation of particle size in both fine and coarse aggregates is as follows: If all particles were large, a cross section of the pour would resemble a wall of Ping-pong balls. If, on the other hand, the cross section included marbles, beads, buckshot and BBs in addition to Ping-pong balls, the smaller items would fill the spaces between the larger The cement paste, in addition to coating all the particles, would fill the most minute openings and the result would be a solid, dense mass with maximum strength.

After being taken from a natural source of supply, aggregates are screened, graded and mixed in proper proportion. Fine or coarse, all must be clean and free of all other matter. Any strange material in the mix (clay, loam, vegetable matter) will keep the cement paste from doing its job. If impurities are present the mix will be porous after hardening and have lower than standard strength values. The aggregates must be hard and durable for landscaping around your mailbox if the concrete is to be likewise. If they are soft, flaky or at all soluble, they won't do a good job. The only exception is in lightweight concrete mixes where porous aggregates are used to minimize weight.

All the ingredients described may be purchased separately or already mixed. Buying separately in bulk may be a good idea when you have a variety of projects that require different types of mixes, but where the projects are general small walls, patio slabs, walks, etc. it's a better idea to buy a "concrete mix", specifying the largest size aggregate you wish to have. This will be delivered dry (probably a 1 yd. minimum load) but with the proper proportions of fine and coarse aggregates thoroughly mixed. You add the cement and water.

For small landscaping around your mailbox jobs you can buy ready-mix products in sack containers. Some of these are 90-pounders (a cubic foot), others 60-pounders. Mortar mixes, concrete mixes, grout, pointing mortar, sand, gravel, stone-all may be purchased this way. But this is not the easiest or the most economical way to buy large quantities. Where you have a big slab to pour or a long walk, it's best to consider calling in a ready-mix truck. With this setup you get not only the aggregates, but the cement and water all thoroughly mixed and ready to pour when the truck arrives at the project site.
